David grew old and died. His son Solomon became the new king of Israel. Solomon loved the Lord and followed the ways of his father David.

One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream. God said, 'Ask for anything you want, and I will give it to you.'

Solomon could have asked for long life, riches, honor, or victory over his enemies. But he did not ask for any of those things. He said, 'Lord my God, I am only a young boy. I do not know how to lead all these people. They are as many as the dust of the ground. Please give me wisdom. Help me know the difference between right and wrong. Then I will be able to lead your people properly.'

God was very pleased with Solomon's request. He said, 'You did not ask for long life or riches. You did not ask for the death of your enemies. You asked for wisdom to do what is right. So I will give you wisdom. There will never be anyone as wise as you before or after you. I will also give you what you did not ask for. I will give you riches and honor. If you follow my ways and obey my commands, I will give you a long life too.'

Soon everyone saw how wise Solomon was. People came from far away countries just to hear him speak.

One day, two women came to King Solomon. They both lived in the same house. Both women had given birth to baby boys three days apart. One of the women said, 'My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby, and three days later, she had a baby too. No one else was in the house with us.'

Then she continued, 'During the night, this woman rolled over on her baby, and he died. She got up while I was asleep and took my son from beside me. She put her dead son next to me. In the morning, I got up to feed my son, but he was dead! When I looked closely, I saw that it was not my son at all.'

The other woman said, 'No! The living son is mine. The dead son is yours.'

The first woman said, 'No! The dead son is yours. The living son is mine.' They argued back and forth in front of the king.

Solomon listened carefully. Then he said, 'Bring me a sword.' Someone brought a sword to the king. Solomon said, 'Cut the living boy in two. Give half to one woman and half to the other.'

The real mother of the living boy was filled with love for her son. She cried out, 'Please, my lord! Give her the living baby! Do not kill him!'

But the other woman said, 'If I cannot have him, neither can she. Cut him in two.'

Then King Solomon said, 'Do not kill the baby. Give him to the first woman. She is the real mother.'

Everyone in Israel heard about the wise way Solomon had judged the case. They respected the king because they saw that God had given him wisdom to do what was right.

Solomon wrote many wise sayings called proverbs. He also wrote the Song of Solomon and the book of Ecclesiastes. People came from all over the world to hear his wisdom, including the Queen of Sheba. When she saw how wise Solomon was, she praised God and said, 'The reports I heard in my own country are true! God has put you on the throne to do what is right and fair.'
