After Jesus finished praying in the garden of Gethsemane, Judas came with a crowd of people carrying swords and clubs. The religious leaders had sent them. Judas went to Jesus and kissed Him. That was the sign to show them which one was Jesus. The men grabbed Jesus and arrested Him.

All the disciples ran away and left Jesus alone. They took Jesus to the high priest. The religious leaders lied about Jesus. They said He had done bad things, but He had not. They wanted to kill Him, but they needed the Roman governor to say yes.

In the morning, they took Jesus to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate asked Jesus, 'Are you the king of the Jews?'

Jesus said, 'Yes, it is as you say.'

Pilate talked to Jesus. He could see that Jesus had not done anything wrong. He wanted to let Jesus go free. But the crowd shouted, 'Crucify him! Crucify him!'

Pilate asked, 'Why? What crime has he done?'

But they shouted even louder, 'Crucify him!'

Pilate was afraid of the crowd. He took water and washed his hands in front of them. He said, 'I am not responsible for this man's death. You are the ones who are doing it.'

All the people answered, 'Let his blood be on us and on our children!'

So Pilate gave Jesus to be crucified. The soldiers took Jesus. They put a purple robe on Him. They made a crown from thorny branches and put it on His head. They laughed at Him and spit on Him. They hit Him on the head with a stick. They said, 'Hail, king of the Jews!' They were making fun of Him.

Then they led Jesus away to be crucified. He had to carry His own cross. But He was so weak from being beaten that He could not carry it. The soldiers grabbed a man named Simon from Cyrene and made him carry the cross for Jesus.

They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means 'The Place of the Skull.' There they crucified Him. They hammered nails through His hands and feet and lifted the cross up into the ground. Two robbers were crucified with Him. One was on His right side, and one was on His left side.

Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing.'

The soldiers gambled for Jesus' clothes. They threw dice to see who would get them. The people stood there watching. The leaders made fun of Jesus. They said, 'He saved other people. Let him save himself if he is really God's chosen one.'

The soldiers also made fun of Jesus. They offered Him sour wine and said, 'If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.'

One of the robbers who was hanging on a cross also insulted Jesus. He said, 'Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!'

But the other robber stopped him. He said, 'Don't you fear God? We are being punished fairly for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.' Then he said to Jesus, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.'

Jesus answered him, 'I tell you the truth. Today you will be with me in paradise.'

From noon until three o'clock in the afternoon, darkness covered the whole land. About three o'clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?'

Some of the people standing there heard this. They said, 'He's calling Elijah.' One man ran and got a sponge. He filled it with sour wine and put it on a stick. He offered it to Jesus to drink. The others said, 'Wait. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him.'

Jesus cried out again in a loud voice. He said, 'Father, into your hands I give my spirit.' Then He died.

At that moment, the curtain in the temple was torn into two pieces. The tear went from the top to the bottom. The earth shook. Rocks broke apart. Graves opened. The dead bodies of many holy people were raised to life.

The Roman officer and the guards with him saw the earthquake and everything that happened. They were very scared. They said, 'This man really was the Son of God!'

Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. We have done wrong things, and the punishment for sin is death. But Jesus took that punishment for us. He died in our place. When we believe in Jesus, God forgives our sins because Jesus already paid for them.
